In Kingston, Jamaica, in the late 1980s, eight men come together to rehearse what is intended to be Jamaica's first openly gay stage production. Though strangers to one another, they share the same dangerous reality: living openly may come at a devastating cost.
When a brutal act of violence shatters their lives, the survivors are forced to confront grief, fear, rage and the long-lasting consequences of hatred. Over the following years, their journeys reveal the emotional scars left behind and the different ways people struggle to survive in a hostile world.
A gripping literary novel and an unforgettable portrait of Jamaica, The Disappearers combines emotional intensity, powerful storytelling and profound humanity. Marlon James delivers one of his most ambitious works to date in this novel.
