עלילת Kairos עוקבת אחר סיפור התאהבות מורכב, מייסר והרסני בין סטודנטית צעירה לסופר נשוי המבוגר ממנה בשנים רבות, על רקע גוויעתה ונפילה של מזרח גרמניה. "שלושים שנה חלפו מאז שהמדינה שנולדתי בה נעלמה, לכן אני יכולה להעז להביט לאחור בזהירות ולבחון את מה שחוויתי", אמרה בטקס הענקת הפרס מחברת הספר, הסופרת הגרמנייה ג'ני ארפנבק, שחלקה את הפרס עם מייקל הופמן, שתרגם את הספר מגרמנית לאנגלית.
